Sherman, James Schoolcraft

Sherman, James Schoolcraft, 1855–1912, Vice President of the United States (1909–12), b. near Utica, N.Y. A lawyer, he was (1884–85) mayor of Utica. Sherman served (1887–91, 1893–1909) as a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives and was a skillful parliamentarian. In 1908 he was elected Vice President on the Republican ticket along with William Howard Taft. Sherman was renominated in 1912 but died shortly thereafter. Nicholas M. Butler ran in his place.
