Stanwyck portrays tough gal Mae Doyle, a wayward woman who reluctantly returns to her dreary hometown and settles down with a nice-guy fisherman (Douglas). A seamy love triangle develops when the restless Doyle finds herself in the arms of the dark, explosive Earl (Ryan). Andes and Monroe shine in supporting performances. A dark, moody adaptation of Clifford Odet's play filled with heavy dialogue and melodrama that holds up over time.
