Harrodsburg

Harrodsburg, city (1990 pop. 7,335), seat of Mercer co., central Ky., S of Frankfort. It is a trade center in a bluegrass area producing livestock, grain, and tobacco. Dairy products, paper goods, optical lenses, and textiles are also made. Harrodsburg is a tourist and resort city, with mineral springs. The oldest settlement W of the Alleghenies, it was founded in 1774 by James Harrod. One of the settlement's early leaders was George Rogers Clark. Pioneer Memorial State Park contains a replica of old Fort Harrod, where the state's first school was conducted.
