BenguelaBenguela (bengel'u, beng–) [key], city (1983 est. pop. 155,000), W Angola, on the Atlantic. It is a rail terminus, export point, and commercial, fishing, and adminstrative center. A fort was built there in the late 16th cent., and the city was founded in 1617. Benguela's port played an important role in slave trading. The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, 6th ed.
